We have plenty of blue jays inside BSM. Blue jays are omnivores, meaning that they will eat anything. They feed on a variety of insects and seeds, particularly acorns and peanuts. They are attracted to sites where other birds are feeding, especially bird feeders.
Blue jays are easily spotted due to the bright blue and white on their tail and wings. They also have a blue crest that can be raised or lowered and a black necklace to add to its appearance. There can be a lot of variability in the shade and width of its color markings as shown in this photo.

Blue jays have a wide variety of sounds and calls. They make a harsh, descending call announcing themselves with “jaaay, jaaay. jaaay”. They also mimic the calls of other birds, like the scream of our red-shouldered hawks, “keeyuur”.
But they quiet down when it comes to nesting so they don’t expose the nest location to predators. Happy birding!
