Burnt Store Marina is a privately owned gated community where the community owns the streets, however, the Board of Directors has authorized the Lee County Sheriff’s Department to provide traffic control according to the laws governing county roads. All traffic controls, stop signs, caution signs and speed limits are enforceable by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO). Traffic patrols by the LCSO are random throughout the community. Consequently, all use of the streets in BSM must be in compliance with standard state and county traffic regulations.
Speed limits are posted on all the main roads, and are generally 30 MPH, except where noted, and this is particularly evident on the “S” curve on Matecumbe Key Road, from Cape Cole Blvd. to The Resorts entrance, where the speed limit is 20 MPH. This is a necessary speed reduction area, since the curves are sharp and visibility is restricted with the entrances to Safe Harbor facilities on one side, and the Fitness Center on the other side.
Stop signs are legal instructions requiring a full stop at all locations by all vehicles.
In Burnt Store Marina, cars and trucks share the road with golf carts, bicyclists, skaters and walkers. Bike lanes are provided along Islamorada Blvd., Cape Cole Blvd., and on Matecumbe Key Road. On Islamorada and portions of Cape Cole, the bike lanes are on both sides of the road.
Where there is only one bike lane on a road, golf carts and bicyclists may not use this lane to go against traffic. They must use the roadway and go with the traffic in the proper lane and observe all traffic laws and posted signs.
Walkers, joggers, runners and skaters should always move facing traffic, and go in single file when the lane is busy.
Everyone (walkers, golf cars, bikers, joggers and skaters) must follow Florida traffic laws, and observe all posted traffic signs; violations can result in fines. Restrictions on the age of drivers for golf carts are also Florida law, and violators are subject to fines.
